November News LLetter

Wow! The first quarter has gone by in a blink. We finished with great results in both the MAFT and the LAFT. We finished our first benchmark 5.5 with the class average of 94%. Great job gang!

This month we will be focusing on Addition and Subtraction of Fractions in Math, Verbs in English, Comprehension and Predicting in Reading Groups, finishing Physical Science and moving toward Earth Science, and in History we are learning more about the first Colonies. It will prove to be an exciting month.

Our read aloud about Homer P Figg is almost finished. The next read aloud will be Marching for Freedom, by Elizabeth Partridge. It's a great story about young African American kids fighting for equal rights. They fight along side Dr. King. This story will teach us about the hardships young Black children went through during a time when equal right did not exist.

Please consider purchasing this book for your child to read aloud. It's a great way to earn AR points and learn about important accurate historic events. This book is item 68, and sells for $6.00. Again, please consider purchasing this book for your child. You could also purchase several books for donation purposes. Thanks for your generosity.

Week 6

Progress reports are going home Friday. Please sign and return them by next Friday. When viewing your child's grades do not be alarmed when you see a blank space where a grade should be. That means I haven't entered in all grades. If you see a ZERO (0), that means your child earned a zero. A blank does not count as a zero.
Make sure you child is reading AR every night. It is crucial for their brain development.

Week 5 of School

This year is flying by. We are in our 5th week of school and things are moving smoothly. Here are some things to be looking for this week and the coming weeks.

1. AR= Make sure your child is reading AR. This quarter our AR goal is 20 points. Several student have 0 AR points, while Romeo, Oliver, Alyssa, and Ieng have already met their goal.

2. Jog-a-Thon= We have brought in $350 dollars so far. Our class goal is $1000.00. If we reach our goal of $1000.00 I will take a pie in my face from one of my students. I might even take a pie from all my students..... If the price is right!

3. Sports release forms will go home today in your child's communication folder.

4. STAR diagnostic forms will be sent home in today's communication folders. This form tells you what your child's reading level is currently.

5. Progress reports will be going home soon. We only have 4 more weeks tell the quarter ends. Were does the time go?

Welcome Parents and Students!!!

It is great to be back in room 22. I'm excited for this 2010-2011 school year. Just saying 2011 is weird. I thought we were suppose to be in flying cars by now. Back to the Future lied. This year will be full of new learning and fun. I will hope to update this blog once a week with information on school activities, current material we are studying, and general Riverview information.

Sports
Your child is eligible to participate in Football, Cross Country, and Girls Volleyball. Football will be the only sport practicing this week. Please turn in your permission slip ASAP.

Block R
I will be reviewing Block R with your child sometime next week. We will set goals for the coming months. Please understand that not participating in a sport makes it very difficult to earn Block R.

Back to school
Back to school night is next Thursday, September 2. I will give you specific times soon.

Homework
The homework I give should not take more than 30 minutes. I usually give a page in math, spelling, and English. Every night your child is expected to read 30 minutes a night, minimum. We will discuss homework in detail at BTSN.

AR
The AR goal for the first quarter is 20 points. We read aloud a new book ever quarter. Your child will be allowed to take an AR test to earn points on our read aloud books. I will pass out a Scholastic book order soon with a note describing the read aloud book for the first quarter.

Thank You soooooo MUCH!!!
Oliver, Kaylie, Callista, Shannon, Sydnee, Emiliano, Santiago, Anastasia, Logan, Amber, Jaden, Blake, Jung Ho, Hunter, Avery, Derek, and Nic have all brought in some form of classroom supp lies. Thank you so much parent for that support. The tissue, soap, and hand sanitizer are a blessing. We need these items now and especially when cold season comes around.
